Privacy & Security guide

What a VPN does — and what it doesn’t

A VPN can be a useful privacy layer. It is not a complete security system, an invisibility switch or a guarantee of access.

What changes when you connect

A VPN creates an encrypted connection from your device to a VPN server. Sites see the server’s public IP address, while the local network has less visibility into the destinations you access.

What remains visible

Signed-in services still know who you are. Browser identifiers, cookies, account activity and information you submit do not disappear because a VPN is active.

Questions worth asking

Compare device support, connection controls, documentation, privacy terms, plan duration and renewal conditions. No provider can promise perfect security or permanent access to every service.

  • Does it support every device you use?
  • Are the privacy terms understandable?
  • What happens at renewal?
  • Can you get help when a connection fails?

Bottom line

Use a VPN for the protection it can provide between your device and its server, while keeping realistic expectations about identity, tracking and online safety.
